Rodney Cummins

Rodney E. “Rod” Cummins, age 78, a 17-year resident of Mundelein, IL, formerly of Gurnee, IL, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 after battling Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.

He was born on June 18, 1946 in Detroit, MI. Rod was the beloved husband of 52 years to Judy Cummins (nee Logie); dedicated father of Ann Egger and Jenny (Greg) Martino, both of Park Ridge, IL, adored grandfather of Lexi and Mackenzie Egger and Eddie Martino; devoted son of the late Arthur and Georgiana Cummins; dear brother of Fred (Hope) Cummins, Carol (Tim) Gallivan and fond brother-in-law, cousin and uncle to many.

Rod grew up in Livonia, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Rod was quick-witted and always prepared with an appropriate pun for any situation. Rod could fix anything and was a natural mechanic, he even made a life-long career out of it. He taught Automotive Technology at the College of Lake County for over 25 years. He not only became head of the program, but was also awarded Faculty Member of the Year. Rod loved his students and hoped he made as much of an impact on them as they did on him. Many became his close friends, even decades after he had them in class. Rod was also a consultant for ZF Industries and volunteered for years after retirement as a mentor for the Men of Vision, a non-profit organization that supports the success of young men from all different backgrounds.

Rod was genuine, kind, a loyal husband and a wonderful father. He was also a proud grandfather who loved spending time with his three grandchildren. Rod could always find the best in people and would help anyone in need. He instilled the importance of good work ethic, integrity and grit and led by example.

Rod loved sports cars, motorcycles and boats. He had a passion for sailing, always up for an adventure whether it be a day sail, crossing Lake Michigan or completing his bucket-list journey of sailing his 40-foot Catalina, down to the Florida Keys and back with his wife, Judy. Rod was a historian and avid reader. He not only enjoyed classic literature, but could quote Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe and recite the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Rod was reserved, but would greet everyone and instantly put people at ease. He made a memorable impression and had many longtime friends who will miss his company.

A celebration of Rod’s life will be held on May 31, 2025 from 11 am to 1:30 pm at the South Park Recreation Center at 833 W. Talcott Rd. in Park Ridge, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Rod may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
