Captain Paul John “PJ” Smith, 63, of Vancouver, Washington, passed away peacefully on December 5th, 2024 after suffering a heart attack in Chicago on Nov. 21. Beloved brother of Marianne Smith Johnson (Joel), and Warren A. Smith. Dear son of Paul John Smith Sr. and Mary Theresa Smith. He also leaves behind life partner of 19 years, Steve Cox, favorite cousin M.T. Silvia, nephew Matthew, niece Amy and several cousins.
He grew up fascinated by planes on the naval air bases where his father was stationed. PJ began his aviation career at 14 when he did his first solo flight. He worked as a baggage handler while attending flight school just to be around airplanes. He flew for United Express, WestAir, and Reno Air before becoming a first officer on the MD80 for American Airlines, later moving to the 737. He became Captain in 2016.
Outside the flight deck, PJ was a smart-witted, kind and gentle man who enjoyed classical music, a good cigar, meteorology, driving his 73’ Cadillac, time with family and friends and friends that have become family. He was always willing to help someone, especially if it involved engines or moving someone along their aviation career. He will be missed by all who knew him. Contributions can be made to allclassical.org in his name.
Arrangements entrusted with Chicagoland Cremation Options of Schiller Park, IL.
