Marsha Margaret Carlson, a beloved resident of The Garlands in Barrington, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on May 21, 1938, she was the cherished daughter of Paul and Margaret Mackanos (Yaros) and the sister of Terry, who recently preceded her in death.
Marsha was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who deeply loved her family, Indiana University, and her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. Known for her vibrant personality, she was often described as the life of the party, bringing joy to social events and gatherings. Marsha was an excellent student, an avid reader, a dedicated teacher, and a loyal travel companion to her husband on their many adventures.
On Valentine's Day in 1959, Marsha married Dr. Milton Ross Carlson, and they enjoyed 48 wonderful years together. They raised four children: Marcy Carlson Speer, Nathan Ross Carlson, Eric Kyle Carlson, and Kris Milton Carlson. Marsha and Milt's love story began during college on his boat, a wooden Century Resorter, at a party on Lake Michigan near their hometown in Northern Indiana. Their journey together took them from Valparaiso to Indianapolis and eventually to Champaign, Illinois.
Marsha is survived by her two sons, Eric Kyle Carlson (Lynne) of Barrington, Illinois, and Kris Milton Carlson (Lisa) of Wayzata, Minnesota. She was immensely proud of her eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Marcy’s children, Kira and Casey; Nathan’s son, Wesley; Eric’s children, Blair, Mitchell, Paige, Dean, and Clara; and Kris’ children, Ellie, Margot, and Meg. Wesley and his wife, Swaleha, blessed Marsha with two great-grandchildren, Alina and Dominic.
A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research. This link will take you to her tribute page:
