Jim Rivera, 70, of Chicago passed away peacefully on November 10th, with his daughter by his side.
Loving father of Kristin Rivera (Giovanni Rumbolo) and endeared furry grandfather of Osito. Dear brother of Frank (Wanda) Rivera, Ron (Annette) Rivera and Elsie (Chris) Palabrica. Cherished uncle and treasured friend of many.
Jim was born to Emilia and Fransisco Rivera on March 21, 1954 and was raised in Chicago, the second born of four children. He attended Western Illinois University where he met a group of life-long friends, and raised one daughter affectionately called, Coquito (his little coconut). Jim was a longtime manager and outdoor outfitter specialist at Erehwon, which aligned with his love of exploring the outdoors and encouraging others to do the same.
Always believing that we were put on this earth to help one another, Jim led many drives for the homeless in Chicago; donating tents, sleeping bags, coats and many many meals over the years. He wanted everyone to feel seen and during these visits to the overpasses and parks of Chicago, he would always take the time to sit down and have real conversations with the people he was helping.
If not spending time with his family, Jim fully immersed himself in sports, the arts, and nature. Since a young boy, Jim has always loved football. First playing himself and later passionately following the NFL and college football. So passionately in fact, that several tv screens were taken out by a glass or within reach book. Jim was one of the most creative people you’d ever meet. Collecting unique pieces of art from around the world, building his own hand painted blow gun, making stained glass pieces, or carving one of his beautiful wood figurines - his creations were endless. But above all, Jim held a pure and endless love for the outdoors. He traveled to many beautiful places- mountaineering, hiking, canoeing, and camping under the stars. Jim found his inner peace when surrounded by Mother Nature. It is this restful peace that we know his beautiful soul has found, once again.
A celebration of life for Jim will be held at a later date and time to be determined.
To contribute something in Jim’s honor, the family asks that you support the World Wildlife Fund or sponsor a planting of memorial trees.
