Helen Louise Long Carlock, 87, of Chicago, passed away on September 23, 2024. Helen was born to Madeleine Irene Winslow and Harold Leahy Long of Toledo, Ohio. She was a beloved companion to Glenn Evans for 43 years and cherished aunt to Heather N. Long and John A. Long (Michele). She was also a great aunt to Andi Jean Long. Helen is preceded in death by her parents and brother, John Winslow Long (2006).
This June, Helen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Helen chose quality of life and comfort care as the cancer was not operable. She spent the summer at home with Glenn as her full-time caregiver, receiving many visits from family and friends before going into a nursing home for the last two weeks of her life. Her final weeks were filled with visitors, kind staff, a trip outside in the sunshine, a massage, good food, ice cream and her daily black coffee. She died peacefully and painlessly on Monday morning, September 23rd at the Citadel of Wilmette.
Helen was a graduate of Northwestern University. Her professional journey was marked by her long tenure at Encyclopedia Britannica, where she served as the manager of the department of correspondence and research. After her time at Britannica, she contributed her expertise to the U.S. Census Bureau.
A dedicated member of her community, Helen held the position of Secretary for the Juneway Building Corporation for over 40 years. Her responsibilities included representing the building in matters with the City of Chicago, maintaining communication with shareholders, and ensuring the efficient management of building operations. Her efforts were pivotal in transitioning the building to allow mortgages, opening the doors to many new residents over the decades.
Politics were a passion for Helen, who was actively involved with the IVI-IPO (Independent Voters of Illinois/Independent Precinct Organization) and the 49th Ward Democratic Party. She was known for her tireless efforts in getting out the vote and canvassing, earning the respect of local politicians. Helen quietly supported numerous political candidates and causes across the United States, contributing to over 150 organizations including the Southern Poverty Law Center, ACLU, World Wildlife Fund, and many others. Her philanthropy reflected her deep commitment to social justice, animal welfare, and the arts. .
In addition to her political and charitable pursuits, Helen enjoyed the vibrant Chicago arts scene, attending theater productions, opera performances, and dance events. Helen loved classical music and attending the Music of the Baroque concerts. Her generosity and zest for life left an indelible mark on those who knew her.
Helen was also a loving cat mom to many feline companions throughout her years in Rogers Park. She loved animals and gave special attention to the many cats that came through her door. She was a true "childless cat lady." Stripes, her final cat, brought much joy to her daily life.
Helen's legacy will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the many lives she touched through her kindness and dedication. A memorial will be held on Saturday, November 9th, 2024 to honor her life and contributions to the community.
10:00am - Inurnment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery (301 Chicago Ave, Evanston, IL 60202) followed by a Celebration of Life ceremony at First United Methodist Church (516 Church St, Evanston, IL 60201) The family will greet visitors from 11:30-12:00 Celebration of Life service at 12:00. Reception to follow at Prairie Moon Restaurant (1635 Chicago Ave, Evanston, IL 60201)
