Eugene Pope

d. March 11, 2019

Eugene Pope, 69 of Chicago, Illinois passed away, March 11, 2019 in his home. Eugene was born January 21, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois to Lee Willie Pope and Viola (Walker) Pope. He graduated from John Marshall Metropolitan High School in East Garfield Park neighborhood on the Westside of Chicago, IL. Throughout his early years of employment, Eugene was a dedicated and hard worker. He was employed with R.R Donnelly, and later with Hart Schaffner Marx. During his post retirement, Eugene worked part-time jobs to remain active. Many knew “Gene” enjoyed spending time with his family and friends especially in his younger years. His presence and infectious laugh were felt at family gatherings, which included barbecues and card games with his aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers. He was passionate about family and spending time in the kitchen baking sweet goodies and cooking soul food meals. His ear for music resonated throughout the house, which included Les Montgomery, the infamous jazz musician. In Gene’s pastime, he would travel to Mississippi to go fishing and return with bags of his fresh catches. We joked about this may because of his ancestral paternal connections to Guinea-Bissau. He loved time to himself with much of the demise of his family members who wanted more of his infectious spirit, laughter and wisdom. Gene was very gifted in art and fixing of things around the home, a natural handyman. Long conversations on the phone that were not enough and much to few, and gave those who talked to him the true man and his inner thoughts and feelings. Gene was a charismatic man who shied away from social gathering but when he showed up was the life of the party. Gene loved time at Aunt Pat and Uncle Jesse’s home which was the nucleus of family gatherings. All who came in contact with Gene was swept away and had pleasant words to say about him. Gene was a man that all wanted more time with siblings, friends but mostly his kids which was a testament to how special he was. Gene was a man of faith, holding positions in many congregations, also pastoring to those who would listen and visited various church services throughout the Chicagoland area. Eugene Pope, tried to conquer his short comings the best he knew how, in his life he was a success and all is forgiven from family and friends for any imperfections. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents Lee and Viola Pope, his son Shawn Pope, his brothers Oscar Pope, William Pope, Jesse Pope and sisters Eunice Rogers, Vastoria Parker, Mable Pillow, and his beloved Uncle Jesse and Aunt Pat Boaz. Eugene is survived by his four sons: Mark Pope, Cedric Pope, Brian Pope and Theron Pope-Immanuel (Eskedar). Two daughters: Africa Perrin (James), Brittney Clark (Damien). Grandchildren stated & unstated: Malcolm Perrin, Jahleel Perrin, Quintel Clark, Tsion Immanuel and Kedest Immanuel. His sisters: Patricia Childs, Lillie Moore and Georgette Landrum.
