Christopher "Chris" Clay Mettam, a man who brought joy to everyone he met, passed away on August 12, 2024, at the age of 55. Chris was a courageous fighter who battled melanoma for three years with an unwavering spirit. Even as treatment consumed much of his time, his optimism remained an enduring beacon, inspiring all who knew him.
Chris was born on December 9, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois, to Eva Herbsthofer and Kenneth Henry Mettam. From a young age, Chris showed a curiosity for the world around him. He graduated from Ball State University in 1992 with a double major in journalism and history, and he also attended the University of Helsinki in 1992. Chris's love of learning never faded, and he was always eager to discuss history, philosophy, or current events.
Chris was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed working out, boating, attending concerts, and playing golf. With the births of his children, Sienna and Max, Chris's focus shifted to spending time with his family. He loved taking them on nature walks in Ryerson Woods, swimming in the backyard pool, and traveling together. Chris was fortunate to visit many countries, including Australia, Finland, Peru, Mexico, the Czech Republic, Russia, Austria, Great Britain, Scotland, and Canada.
Professionally, Chris found success as a financial advisor. His warm personality and genuine interest in people helped him build strong relationships with his clients, who considered him more than just a financial advisor; they considered him a friend. Chris was a devoted father to Sienna and Max Mettam, and a loving uncle to Evelyn and Madeline Mettam. He will be deeply missed by his children, mother of his children Daniela Mettam, his brothers Matthew (Laura), Devin (Katherine), and Dane (Tiffany), his nieces, and all who knew him.
A Memorial service celebrating Chris's life will be held Saturday, August 31st at 11am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 3075 N. Buffalo Grove Rd. Buffalo Grove, IL 60089. A luncheon with refreshments will follow, so that friends and family can visit and share memories of Chris.
In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy can make a donation to the Melanoma Research Foundation, the American Cancer Society or a College Fund set up for his children through Bright Directions. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Please leave a memory of him in the guestbook below.
Chris will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, IL.
